Copa workers fired the day Katrina hit

September 20

Internet gambling players have been reading many stories regarding the Mississippi casinos that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. While many bigger casinos are keeping employees on the payroll, the Copa Casino cannot afford it.

So, instead of receiving three months pay and benefits like many of the other out-of-work casino workers on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, employees of the Copa Casino are saying that  they were given a final paycheck and a termination letter the same day Hurricane Katrina hit the devastated area.

The huge storm blew into Mississippi, destroying many Gulf Coast casinos including those owned by Las Vegas-based corporations, Harrah's Entertainment and MGM Mirage. While Harrah's and MGM Mirage workers received three months pay and benefits, Copa Casino workers say the company that prided itself on being locally owned and operated isn't providing the same level of compassion.

Due to Copa executives, this is simply because it is a small local company that is not backed by a corporation running other casinos.

Another nearby casino, Treasure Bay Casino, which was actually suing its insurer to recover damages from previous storms, also could not provide its employees with a continuing payroll and benefits package. This is sad, many worker are out of a job and a home. Internet gambling players have been playing charitable tourneys all over the Net to provide some sort of relief to the stricken people in the region where Katrina hit. With regrets, it is a situation that will probably take a long time to fix.
