Beau Rivage damage from Katrina larger than
first reported
October 10
After
Katrina finished hitting Biloxi, it first appeared to online
slots players that the Beau Rivage casino resort only sustained moderate
damage. Well, that's what it looked like from the outside. The $800
million pride and joy of the Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos is worse
that we thought. -
But a closer look revealed a gloomier picture, and now the resort's Las Vegas-based parent company, MGM Mirage Inc., predicts the Beau Rivage will be the single-biggest loss of any of the 13 casinos lining the Mississippi coast. New estimates for fixing the 1,740-room casino resort could cost hundreds of millions of dollars and take 12 to 16 months to complete. The Beau Rivage was built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, and its exterior walls and core architectural structure materialized largely intact. But the real damage is inside. The company has hired a small army to revive the Beau Rivage, but debris remains visible in all corners of the gutted first floor. Large sections of the wall facing the Gulf of Mexico has huge wounds from the massive storm-surge and the first two floors of the parking garage were completely washed away. T he front desk is a pile of battered computers and office wear. The atrium has been destroyed and the only people milling around are construction workers not tourists. In the months before the hurricane, MGM Mirage spent millions improving the Beau Rivage by adding Vegas-like fixutres as a nightclub and high-end restaurants. Those investments were all destroyed. We will keep our online slots fanes updated on this timely and very costly renovation process.
